What a story, and what characters. So there&#8217;s this website, <a href="http://genjipoems.org/">genjipoems.org</a>, that went live this spring. For the first time, it has collected in one place all the poems people send to one another in <em>The Tale of Genji</em> -- all 795 of them! You get the Japanese, a transliteration, then translations from the five existing English translations of the book -- and you can add your own! </p><p>Hey, poetry friends, why not give it a shot? J. Keith Vincent, the Boston University Professor who, with his students, has compiled this astounding database and anthology, would welcome you. Go to the website, read a few poems, compare the translations, and try posting a version. You don&#8217;t need to have read <em>Genji</em>, though you&#8217;ll probably want to eventually (I read the Arthur Waley version).</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://johntimpane788545.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading! Join me!</p><p>See, I wrote <em>Poetry for Dummies</em> in 2000, and now my editors have me chained to a rock until I finish a revised edition. So I was writing a section about <em>Genji</em>, learned of <a href="http://genjipoems.org/">genjipoems.org</a>, and my head, as it does a lot, exploded. I got in touch with Professor Vincent, we hit it off, and he invited me to submit some translations. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know Japanese, so they&#8217;d be &#8216;versions&#8217; rather than translations,&#8221; I said. &#8220;Totally legit,&#8221; he said. I tried three, he loved &#8216;em, he posted them, and now I can use them in <em>Pottery for Dummkopfs</em>! Here they are, with the context in the book:</p><p>So here is Book 2, Poem 2. The wife of a game warden for the emperor&#8217;s court is upbraiding her husband for his unfaithfulness. These poems are, by the way, like tanka:</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!PqWg!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!PqWg!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!PqWg!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!PqWg!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!PqWg!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!PqWg!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg" width="960" height="641" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/ed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:641,&quot;width&quot;:960,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!PqWg!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!PqWg!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!PqWg!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!PqWg!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fed957b55-a3e0-49d4-b8b1-de4c1d849250_960x641.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Here is Book 3, Poem 1. Seventeen-year-old Genji, heir apparent, writes to a woman he would take for a lover. It&#8217;s one of the sublest, most delicate poems in the whole novel:</p><p>Dew on the wings of</p><p>A molted cicada shell</p><p>In the secrecy </p><p>Of a shady tree; secret,</p><p>My sleeves grow damp with my tears.</p><p>And here is a poem from Book 8. Genji has ravished the daughter of a woman who is his sworn enemy ... yet despite all this he and the young woman fall in love. He writes this to his beloved:<br><br>You love the beauty<br>of moon-set amid late-night<br>mists -- clearly I see<br>that our togetherness is<br>no mist, but strong, enduring.</p><p>I hold few fast assumptions about female and male, but one of the things I love about <em>Tale of Genji </em>is that the female novelist, Murasaki Shikibu, is very interested in creating characters who see one another and take what they see to heart. In spite of himself, Genji has fallen in love with a woman he basically raped (terrible), but, as he gets to know her, he discovers in her a delicacy and a love for beauty. <em>That </em>is what has conquered him and makes him think their togetherness, in spite of all that is against it, will endure.</p><p>Could be fun. Try your hand!</p><p></p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://johntimpane788545.substack.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading!
